3 Phases to Mastering Your Dog's Walk Transformation

Transform Your Dog's Walk with Ease by Following These Proven Phases

#1

Foundational Training

In this learning and teaching phase, we start in a very low distraction area like our home having a leash attached to our dogs collar we start my taking one step when our dog is inline with our leg , not out in front , we "mark "by saying yes, and feed after the word yes. This is showing our dogs exactly where we want them to be when the leash is on and we reward them for i.e. won't want to put a name to the position just yet, what we are doing is rewarding our dogs for proper position, we want to be very clear to our dogs exactly where we want them ,so it makes it very easy for them to learn. When we notice our dogs coming into this position after a few repetitions (5-25) we can now put a name to this like "heel" or "side" or "left" or "right" this can be of your own choosing , we can then advance to "marking" every 2 steps or if our dogs are doing great 3 or 4 steps saying our word "heel" and then "mark" yes and give food or small treat

#2

Repetition and Progression

Still helping the dog if they require it and dog is successful , until dog will do the desired behavior on command. This phase of teaching our dogs will be the phase that requires many repetitions, still working in the house by now your dog know what you are asking from them and will be able to do the heel when asked for maybe up to 5 or 7 steps in a row, I suggest doing 3 ten minute sessions per day in the house , when you feel this is going really well , We will move outside , the backyard , we are adding in a distraction the environment. We need to start back at the learning phase, to our dogs this is all new and they haven't done the heel outside , we start with one step say heel and mark "yes" and feed. Our dogs will start to understand that what happens inside is the same as outside. Get the repetitions in here and when your dog is progressing well , we can move to the front yard or front street , and we start back at the learning phase once again, to show our dogs where we want them , and also that in all environments we want the same position , again we will have to do many repetitions here , Because that is how all dogs learn is through repetitions, the more you put into this phase , will be rewarded in future walks , if our dogs run to the end of the leash , we simply turn and walk in the opposite direction. I often tell my clients to use their dogs meals for this instead of treats to avoid overfeeding. Also dogs really like to work for the reward, and learn really quick

#3

Building Independence

Dog now knows the behaviour,we can start to add more elements to this phase to have our dogs achieve desired command in any environment. When we get to this stage we have done many reps with our dogs and had lots of success and are very pleased with our dogs, we will not be have to use food as often , because our dogs know where they should be, and dogs are going to make mistakes as humans do, so if we are walking and our dogs gets out in front simply stop moving forward this reminds the dog we don't go ahead until you are by my side. We let our dogs do some problem solving here , they may offer a sit or look to you for direction , we are patient and let our dogs do some independent thinking, when this happens our dogs really love this because they think that they've done this all on their own, and they are even more likely to make good choices next time they think about pulling at the end of the leash

To begin the walk, we must first start the walk before the walk. The state of mind of our dogs prior to leaving the house, if we don't address this our dogs excited state will be carried out the door onto our walk.By helping our dogs be calm in the house we can be calm on our walk. This key point will help to put the steps in place to start a more enjoyable walk, for both hound and handler.Once we have a calm dog and want to go outside, we aren't allowing our dogs to bolt out the door first we can go together or human first.

If our dogs move out in front we simply stop and wait for them to return to our side. This is showing our dogs where we want them to be, and please understand that this take LOTS of practice and PATIENTS

Our second phase is really about being consistent and paying attention to where our dog is.Also what our dog is paying attention to.And teaching them that it pays to be watching what we are doing and and when they do they will be rewarded. This is where I suggest this is how our dogs will eat their dinner or breakfast,They very quickly realize that being by your side will pay them very well , and start to understand that not being by our sides means no food. This works so well in fact you'll be wondering why you hadn't been doing this all along.I will also walk a lot slower to really help my dog learn that every step means something, and I'm here to show them, exactly where I'd like them to be while we walk

It is well know that putting in repetition daily and in the beginning a few times a day to really help our dogs,I also have found that keeping these training and teaching sessions really short helps both our dogs and ourselves not get frustrated , because i can relate as can our dogs. I like to make learning fun and our dogs love it too! And the best part of keeping training short and fun,our dogs learn quicker then rigid strict methods that are very outdated , in fact they want to be in a proper position , and when they are they trust that we will look out for them and keep them safe. And i don't know about you but I can always use a bit more of a secure feeling.

Happy and Fun walking, With less stress!

I'm Michelle Elke owner and head trainer of

Leash and Leader

I came into dog training as a person who had a highly reactive aggressive dog, I went to many trainers and attended many classes to "fix" my dog, I discovered we had a relationship problem not a training problem, I couldn't train her aggression away , I needed to understand her and help her work through these issues. Until I discovered this I was stuck, anxious, afraid often crying at the other end of the leash. AND when the change happened we had the most trusting and meaningful bond, one I had never felt before, And I knew I wanted to help others who have the same issues, overcome the anxiety and feel the same rewarding relationship gift I had with my dog Winnie. AND pay it forward in any way I can dog training is a huge passion of mine , where I continue to learn and expand my knowledge base in order to best help my clients and their beloved dogs

My Mission

My mission in this life is to help the dog owners who struggle with their dogs, the owner that has anxiety leaving the house, who fear's going for a walk in case they come accross another dog,the owner that has to take wide births to avoid seeing another dog build their confidence and show them that they can overcome their own anxiety and fear and have an amazing relationship with their dog ,let go of what happened yesterday, start fresh today live in moment, because that's how our dogs are naturally and I believe that's a gift.To help show dog owners that just because you have a reactive dog doesn't mean we need to feel embarrarsed or that we are bad dog owners , only that we have work to do!
